Hello All,

I'm writing an article for McClung's Magazine, a bi-annual feminist publication affiliated with Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. I'd like to know what people here think about the way that chocolate commercials conflate food and sex and contribute to unhealthy dependencies on food for comfort. I'm thinking of the Dove chocolate commercials, Hershey's bliss, Cote d'Or...Also what do you think about the use of thin models to advertise an inherently fatty food? How does that make you feel?

Also, Please let me know whether it would be alright to quote you.

Thank you all so much.

Milena

I watched the Hershey Bliss commercial. Like any commercial they do use healthy attractive people to sell their product. But take a look at the product. Bliss is sold as bite size pieces and you only see them just eating one. Now you take a look at commercials like Burger King or Jack in the Box and they show their product up close rotating around looking all juicy and big......then showing an average person gorging themselves with it.

Hershey was careful not to advertise their product as something you gorge yourself on but as something you indulge in lightly.....just have one or two. They didn't show any one digging into a whole bag and stuffing their face.

You can't blame advertisers for peoples unhealthy food dependencies. People who eat for comfort usually have issues such as depression and obsessive compulsive disorder to name a few. It's no different than people who blame video games or death metal music when a teenager goes out and kills others. The problem stems from a disorder or mental illness. Also to blame for over eating is how people are raised. I'm 44, growing up us kids played outside and were not allowed to eat "crap" as my mom put it. Now a days a DVD is called a"great babysitter" Kids are driven to school, not allowed to go play without an adults supervision (what adult has time for that), with both parents working fast food is brought home bc the haven't the time to cook, and things like pizza pops (crap food) is purchased bc it can be popped into the microwave. It's how we live now. With the change of technology, the cost of living, a fear of child molesters, drug dealers and the increase of violence in our society are HUGE contributing factors to society's growing waistline.

The are commercials. They DO hold some truth to them. If you eat a bite a day, especially if it's dark chocolate, it does contribute to our health. Unfortunately for consumers, we eat the whole bar and that's when it turns unhealthy.

Many companies, no only chocolate manufacturers, use sex, healthy sexy people, and love (both in a relationship, or family love) to sell their products. Who, as a kids, hasn't had their mom buy them chocolates or make them a cake? Who doesn't like the smooth, creamy sensation of chocolate? It all boils down to our emotions and what we want for ourselves, and that's what companies exploit. Whenever you're feeling down, unloved, angry, many go for chocolate because it somehow links us to the family warms or a moment we enjoyed- and most of the time it's subconscious. Sexy people are linked to many products because it's all what msot of us aim for- a healthy body with sexy curves that will attract a would-be partner.

Companies are not going to tell you that their product will make you fat if you eat 1-2 bars per day. They aim to sell their product, so it's natural that they sell the attributes of chocolate in whatever way we deem more attractive - by linking them to the curvy body we want, with love or sex. It's what women do too; put on make-up to hide our imperfections and look our best. You can't blame a company for doing the same.

Chocolate are fatty foods, but they are not half as bad as things like McDonalds, Burger King or KFC. What's best, they do contribute to our health if taken in small quantities. It's those burgers, malts, fries and nuggets have contributed more to obesity than chocolate (with all those dollar menus, how can't they?)

If we don't take more chocolate than what we need (1 bite-size square three times a week or so), we shouldn't have a problem with it. Heck, even the commercials show people only eating a bite size square-and very slowly. Take a hint from them-enjoy the chocolate, eat slowly, eat little and it should actually be good for you.

(you may quote me, if you wish. xD(

Hey it's common sense.......we all know what's not good for us. I might eat McDonald's twice a year to remind myself how gross it really is. It's consumer beware and everyone does know better. Everyone should stop blaming these places that do serve fatty food, on their obesity. It's all about choice. Time for everyone to finally step up and take responsibility for their own actions and their bad eating habits!

I eat one square of Baker's Chocolate every few days.
Always with a glass or two of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Bittersweet flavor. But, never during sex.
Pardon me while I catch my breath and straighten my legs out.
OH!!!! This is Heaven......
Now....what was your question again?
